In American slang, a “tightwad” is someone who doesn’t like to spend money… someone who holds their little wad of cash tightly in their fist, and is reluctant to let go.
And everybody knows what a chef is, right? In the classical French kitchen (and in the restaurant business today), he was the chef de cuisine, a player/coach who both cooked and supervised. But in contemporary usage, the meaning has widened to encompass “anybody who cooks well,” as in the phrase “home chef.”
So. Tightwad (knows the value of money and doesn’t like to spend it) + Chef (likes to cook/enjoys feeding people.)
